You're reading: Ukrainian prosecutors probing several cases related to fighting near Ilovaisk

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office says all those responsible for violating the law in events near Ilovaisk, Donetsk region, including high-ranking armed forces commanders, will be prosecuted.

“Criminal proceedings are opened into each war crime against individuals who committed it. Criminal proceedings are opened into the death of each serviceman; in particular, if only troops, [low-ranking commanders] or possibly the top command were guilty in [the events] near Ilovaisk, all this will be analyzed and considered and personnel decisions will be made. As concerns criminal liability, if the law was broken, they will certainly be held criminally liable,” Prosecutor General’s Office spokesman Yuriy Boichenko said at a news conference in Kyiv on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

A number of criminal cases concerning the events near Ilovaisk are being investigated now, he said.

“There were various actions there; for instance, some people left their location. For instance, there is a criminal case concerning desertion of the Prykarpattia battalion,” Boichenko said.

Over 300 servicemen refused to perform their military duties in a combat situation in the military operation area on Aug. 26, left their positions and headed for their permanent base in Ivano-Frankivsk region, he said.
