Odesa - The State Service on Emergency Situations (SSES) is deploying forces on the banks of the Danube River (in Odesa region) in order to quickly respond to the expected high water on the river, Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul has said.

He told reporters during his visit to the town of Reni that 1,200 rescuers were ready to ensure the safety of residents during possible flooding.

The official said that water levels in some places on the Danube are expected to rise to dangerous levels, but SSES currently foresees no critical situations.

If the situation becomes threatening, the SSES is ready to evacuate 10,000 people living in areas of possible flooding.

“An evacuation is extremely unlikely. But we are prepared for any development of the situation,” Vilkul said.

As reported, maximum water levels at the Ukrainian section of the Danube are expected in late June, but this will not lead to serious negative consequences. The expected maximum water levels near Reni will be 480-520 cm, near Izmail – 320-360 cm, and near Vylkove – 145-155 cm.
