You're reading: UNESCO Executive Board adopts resolution on situation in Crimea

Kyiv, Apr. 11 – The Executive Board of UNESCO on Apr. 10, 2014 adopted by an overwhelming majority a resolution entitled "UNESCO Monitoring Situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Ukraine)," which was introduced by Ukraine. 

In the text of the resolution, deep concern is expressed with the growing presence of Russian military forces on the peninsula, which pose serious threats to equal access to education, freedom of expression and the preservation of cultural heritage, the press service of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry reported.

During his statement in defense of the draft resolution, Permanent Delegate of Ukraine to UNESCO Oleksandr Kupchyshyn outlined the challenges of a humanitarian nature within the scope of the organization’s mandate that Ukraine and the whole international community are facing as a result of Russian aggression in Crimea.

Taking note of the information provided by the Ukrainian delegation, members of the UNESCO Executive Board invited the Director General to follow up on the situation in Crimea in the fields of competence of UNESCO and to report back on the latest developments to the Executive Board at its 195th session.
