The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said it stands ready to assist the Ukrainian authorities in the implementation of the law on ensuring the rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons.

“The step taken today in parliament extends protection to the more than 400,000 people who have been internally displaced within Ukraine. Today is a significant milestone in the country’s effort to protect the human rights of all displaced Ukrainians,” UNHCR Regional Representative for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Oldrich Andrysek said.

According to UNCHR, as of Oct. 16, the number of internally displaced persons in Ukraine was 417,246 people, 95 percent of whom are persons displaced from the east of the country.

The Verkhovna Rada at an extraordinary plenary on Oct. 20 adopted the law on ensuring the rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons.

The law regulates the functioning of a state register of temporarily displaced persons.
