You're reading: United Opposition disappointed at Klitschko’s reluctance to sign agreement on coalition before elections

The Batkivschyna United Opposition is surprised by UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko's reluctance to sign an agreement on the formation of a coalition of democratic forces in parliament, and believes that such a decision will in favor of the Regions Party.

“Today, through the media, we received an answer from Vitali Klitschko, who refused to sign the agreement, explaining this by his alleged reluctance to participate in the distribution of portfolios. Such an answer by the politician who has repeatedly stated that he represents democratic forces has openly surprised us. After all, there’s no mention of any distribution of portfolios in the draft agreement,” reads a statement made by the Batkivschyna United Opposition and released by the press service of the Batkivschyna Party on Thursday.

The opposition also added: “Vitali Klitschko’s refusal to sign an agreement on the creation of a coalition of democratic forces in the next parliament is a move that is in the interests of the Regions Party, a move that turns him into an ally of the Regions Party, a move that will lead to the dissipation of democratic forces, rather than their unity in the struggle against the current regime of [President Viktor] Yanukovych.”

“Now it’s clear why Vitali Klitschko’s UDAR Party disrupted the coordination of joint actions by democratic forces at the beginning of the election process. And then, last week, it unilaterally withdrew from negotiations with the united opposition on the formation of a single list of candidates running for single-member constituencies and, without any consultation with its partners, announced its decision that allows the Regions Party to receive an additional few dozen seats,” the opposition said.

At the same time, Batkivschyna expressed hope that “sooner or later, fully or in the composition of those who resisted government pressure the faction of Vitali Klitschko will join the democratic forces in parliament.”

The signing of the agreement between Batkivschyna and Svoboda is scheduled for October 19.
