The United States are disappointed that the discussions between Ukrainian authorities and opposition were unproductive and hope that this weekend’s protests be allowed to proceed peacefully, the Voice of America reported on Friday, December 13.

“The Ukrainian people… clearly want peace, justice, and a European future…We are disappointed the discussions that began today between the President and the opposition were apparently unproductive. Going into the weekend, it is absolutely imperative that this weekend’s protests be allowed to proceed peacefully,” U.S. State Department Deputy Press Secretary Marie Harf said on Friday.

In response to critics of Russian representatives on the interference of the United States in the internal matter in Ukraine Harf said that it’s important to engage at a high level on this issue.

“We’ve been very clear that we believe the government needs to listen to the voices of the protestors,” she said.

The Voice of America reported that five U.S. congressmen sent a letter to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych where they criticized the use of force during the peaceful protests in Kyiv and called to return on the way to the European democracy.
