The United States is closely monitoring developments around the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 plane that crashed in the east of Ukraine, and is in touch with Ukrainian authorities, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department Jen Psaki said on July 17.

“Our Embassy in Kyiv is in touch with the Ukrainian authorities regarding that accident,” she said.

The U.S. authorities don’t have further information about the causes behind the plane crash and circumstances surrounding it, and information whether there were U.S. citizens on board Boeing 777 is not available at the moment, she said.

“I don’t want to speculate about who is to blame and what was the cause. Such information is not available at the moment,” she said.

The United States may assist in the investigation of the accident if there is a request from Kyiv, she said.
