MOSCOW - The European Union is committed exclusively to a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis, despite pressure on the part of Washington over the issue arms supplies for Kyiv, says Ruediger von Fritsch, German Ambassador to Russia.

“We are being pressured into supplying weapons to Ukraine so that it can defend itself. But we stick to our opinion that this conflict cannot be resolved militarily, that it can only be resolved peacefully,” he said at Lomonosov Moscow State University on March 23.

“This is exactly why we are making diplomatic efforts and our government was able to agree with the U.S. and European partners that we will go down this path precisely,” the ambassador said.

Brussels and Washington are united in their position on how to resolve the Ukrainian problem despite their differences over a number of issues, von Fritsch said.

“Of course, interests, analysis and visions the situation vary. And there exists a host of political issues on which we differ. And there have been situations where we were of an opinion different from that of our U.S. partners. But in principle we are very much united, and with respect to the situation in Ukraine, our positions fully overlap with that of the U.S., and that demonstrates how deep is the shock Europe has experienced from losing confidence (in Russia),” the German diplomat said.
