The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine has said it hopes that parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be held in accordance with international norms and with respect for the rights and freedoms of Ukrainians, without violence and intimidation.

“As the Ukrainian people prepare to go to the polls, for the second time this year, we are looking to the government and all political parties in Ukraine to maintain their resolve to hold parliamentary elections in line with international norms and with respect for the fundamental freedoms the Ukrainian people are entitled to,” the embassy said in a statement released on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

The statement notes that this must include a clear recognition by all those involved in the electoral process that various “business as usual” tactics that have marred previous parliamentary elections, including violence and intimidation, will not be tolerated either before, on or after Election Day.

“The United States stands ready to work with all political parties and leaders who reject such tactics and work towards a successful vote on Oct. 26,” the embassy said.

It also admires Ukraine and Ukrainians for the fact that, despite the many challenges the country currently faces, “the determination to reconfirm the nation’s commitment to the democratic process endures,” reads the statement.

“We stand ready to work with Ukraine’s new parliament to fight corruption and promote reforms. The United States will continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to determine its own future in Europe and to build a more united, secure, independent, and prosperous Ukraine. We also remain committed to working with Ukraine and other partners to find a peaceful resolution to the current conflict in eastern Ukraine,” the embassy said.
