You're reading: Van Rompuy: EU ready to step up sanctions against Russia amid further de-stabilization in Ukraine

The European Union will step up sanctions against Russian legal entities and individuals in case of the further escalation of the situation in Ukraine, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy says. Speaking at a joint briefing with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk in Kyiv on May 12 he said that the EU would introduce sanctions in the form of travel ban and asset freeze if there was no de-escalation.

The EU member countries’ foreign ministers also agreed on May 12 to toughen sanctions against individuals and legal entities, he said.

The EU agreed with the fact that further steps by Russia to destabilize the situation in Ukraine would lead to additional far-reaching consequences regarding a broader range of objects in the economic sphere. Preparatory work in this respect is under way, Van Rompuy added.

As was earlier reported, Van Rompuy twitted earlier on May 12: “The EU is prepared to step up sanctions in case of further de-stabilisation by Russia of Ukraine.”
