President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said the European Unions is deeply concerned over the recent development in Ukraine's east, Ukrainian president's press service said.

“Recent actions of Russia had caused further escalation of the conflict in the Donbas which raised deep concern of the EU leaders and had become a reason for the inclusion of the ‘Ukrainian issue’ into the agenda of the emergency meeting of the European Council,” the press service said referring to the meeting of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Herman van Rompuy in Brussels.

During the meeting Rompuy assured Ukrainian leader that following the discussion at the highest level, the EU would provide a consolidated, fair and adequate evaluation of Russian actions. Particularly, the President of the European Council assured the Ukrainian President that in the course of making the decision by the European Council, the position of the EU would be “solidary and responsible”.

Ukrainian president, in turn, highly evaluated the support and solidarity of the European Union with Ukraine which is particularly important in such a difficult and tragic moment of the Ukrainian history.

“The Head of State noted that bringing Russian troops into Ukraine required adequate response from the EU. The Ukrainian President expressed hope that leaders of the EU member-states would firmly respond to the act of aggression against Ukraine following the meeting of the European Council of August 30, particularly in the context of the provision of military-technical assistance for Ukraine by the EU member states,” the press service said.
