You're reading: Venice Commission to consider draft amendments to Ukraine’s constitution as soon as it receives them

The European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) has announced it will consider the draft amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine concerning judicial reform as soon as it receives them.

At a plenary meeting on March 9, members of the Venice Commission
were informed about Ukraine’s readiness to submit its draft amendments
to the constitution regarding the judicial system for expertise in the
near future, Ukraine’s Mission to the Council of Europe told an
Interfax-Ukraine reporter on Monday.

“The commission expressed its readiness to consider the draft amendments as soon as it receives them,” the mission said.

President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio, in turn,
praised the commission’s cooperation with the Ukrainian government.

“I’m satisfied with the high level of readiness of the Ukrainian
authorities to work together with our experts on the constitutional
amendments and improvement of the electoral legislation, as well as
public prosecution reform. In recent time the Venice Commission has been
paying much attention to Ukraine and is ready to continue its work in
this direction,” he told the commission while reporting on his visit to
Ukraine in February.

Earlier a member of the Venice Commission, Regions Party
parliamentary faction MP Serhiy Kivalov said that the Constitutional
Assembly of Ukraine could submit to the commission its draft amendments
to the constitution in the near future.

First Ukrainian President and Chairman of the Constitutional Assembly
Leonid Kravchuk said that the draft amendments to the constitution
regarding the judicial system would be submitted to the Venice
Commission in March.
