You're reading: Injured victims in deadly Kharkiv fire recovering; investigation continues

People injured in a fire that killed eight people on Jan. 8 in Kharkiv are recovering, authorities said. The deadly fire broke out on Jan. 8 in a five-story industrial building on the territory of the Khartron plant.

Seven of eight injured are improving.

One man who jumped out of a window to avoid the fire, suffered of significant injuries. He underwent surgery but is recoring, according to Segodnya.ua, which cited Elena Kovalyova, chief of the hospital emergency medical care.

The fire at the Khartron plant at 1 Akademika Proskury Street in Kharkiv was reported at 11:29 a.m. on Jan. 8 and was brought under control within two hours.

“The thorough investigation will be started after the incident and all culprits will be brought to justice,” Oleksandr Vilkul, the deputy prime minister, said after visiting the scene.

He also promised that the goverment will pay Hr 100,000 to bereaved families of the eight people who lost their lives. 

Twenty-two people were rescued. The fire damaged 250 square meters on the 4th and 5th floors of the building, the emergencies service said.

According to preliminary data from State Service of Ukraine on Emergency Situations, the cause of the fire could be a security breach, which triggered an explosion of flammable substances in one of the production units.
