Ukraine has all grounds to demand from Russia to compensate losses for damage of infrastructure, including in international courts, a managing partner of Volkov & Partners law firm, Oleksiy Volkov has said.

“There are all of the grounds to appeal to the international courts. From the point of view of court prospects, Ukraine has all that is required to launch proceedings in courts. Moreover, there is information that some of the proceedings have been started, including on declaring Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and demanding to compensate damage caused by the aggression,” he told Interfax-Ukraine.

Commenting on prospects of getting compensation, he said that the issue is only in desire of Russia to refund the proved damage.

“Many our colleagues-lawyers say that one of the directions of Putin’s policy today is the creation of quasi-states to which he will not have to compensate anything and only to provide aid for restoration or the achievement of agreements on the settlement of the issue without mutual claims,” Volkov said.

“I think that both positions are unacceptable for Ukraine as international society will not support Ukraine in creating such a contradictory precedent of forced option of the annexation and change of borders in Europe. The agreement of Ukraine to such forced change of borders will create a dangerous precedent, which is not in line with the final act of the Helsinki conference of OSCE on security and cooperation in Europe,” he added.
