U.S. specialists will be engaged in the work of the Energy Crisis Headquarters under Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers, the press service of the Ministry of Regional Development, Construction and Housing & Utilities reported on Aug. 21.

The agreement was reached at a meeting between Regional Development Minister and First Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Hroisman and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability William Bryan on Aug. 21.

“Specialists from the United States with experience in emergency situations amid limited energy supply or power blackouts will join the Cabinet’s Energy Crisis Headquarters,” the press service said.

Participants in the meeting also agreed that the most important aspect that requires the concentration of joint efforts is how Ukraine will live through the autumn and winter amid a halt to Russian gas shipments, and especial attention will be devoted to the solution to this problem in the eastern regions of Ukraine.

The sides also discussed a range of measures that can be offered by the United States to assist Ukraine in this situation.

Bryan said that his team’s task is to help Ukraine live through the winter. He said he hopes his team’s experience will help Ukraine, as they develop technologies, procedures, tools, and plan models of preparation for emergency situations under the conditions of power blackouts. An ad hoc group of U.S. specialists will be formed soon, he added.

“We must be prepared, if necessary, to meet challenges if the situation goes according to the worst-case scenario. And it is very important for us to use the experience of those who have repeatedly tackled similar challenges,” Hroisman said in turn.
