You're reading: Warfare in east Ukraine results in damage to over 130 railway infrastructure facilities

Due to warfare in May-July 2014 at Donetsk, Prydniprovska and Pivdenna railways, over 130 railway infrastructure facilities were damaged.

“This includes 13 artificial facilities, bridges and viaducts, for
the restoration of which over Hr 76 million is required,” Deputy Head
of the State Railway Administration of Ukraine (Ukrzaliznytsia) Vitaliy
Zhurakivsky said at a briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He said that also 56 facilities of tracks were damaged and over Hr 3.5 million is required to repair them.

Buildings of eight railway stations, a building of a hospital at the
Krasny Lyman station and Hr 4.5 million is required to restore them.

“There were 54 cases of damaging electrification and power supply
devices, 15 cases of damaging equipment of other companies, including
regional power supply companies,” he said.

Damages were registered on 30 kilometers of the overhead contact
system two traction substations, one power transformer, 10 transformer
substations and 40 transformers have been damaged. Hr 205 million is
needed to restore them.

A total of 27 cases of damaging automated and communications devices and Hr 22 million is to be allocated to repair them.

“In general, according to preliminary assessments, losses of railways
from terrorists’ acts came to around Hr 300 million,” Zhurakivsky
said.

He said that today railway workers have to work in the very difficult conditions to ensure movement of trains.

“Some facilities of railway infrastructure are still unexamined, as
access to them is restricted due to warfare. Among them are five track
facilities, one third of cases of damaging the power supply systems was
not examined, there is no access to Kondrashivska-Nova, where the bridge
towards the power station in Schastia town is damaged,” he said.

Zhurakivsky also said that as of July 22, 2014, railway workers
restored 43 track facilities out of 56 damaged facilities worth Hr 1
million. In addition, six artificially created facilities worth Hr 1.6
million were built using a temporary scheme.

“Energy engineering workers are restoring power supply systems and 30
kilometers out of almost 30 kilometers of the overhead contact system
damaged are partially restored. A total of 3.2 kilometers of overhead
lines were restored and on power transformer of the traction substation
was replaced. Hr 13.7 million was spent on this,” he said.

Zhurakivsky also said that the operation of Sloviansk railway station
was resumed, and a hospital at the Krasny Lyman station is being
restored.

“Under an order of Director General of Ukrzaliznytsia Borys Ostapiuk,
the administration using own funds is restoring infrastructure in the
counterterrorist operation zone. A free Wi-Fi zone is built in
Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Krasny Lyman. It is available at the Sloviansk
station, and Wi-Fi Internet will be soon provided at stations in
Luhansk and Kramatorsk,” he said.
