US Vice President Joe Biden has urged Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to continue the search for compromises with the opposition and immediately sign the laws adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, reads a statement posted on the White House's Web site.

According to the statement, Yanukovych called Biden to update him on the current situation in Ukraine.

“The Vice President welcomed the progress made today [on Tuesday] and
urged President Yanukovych to sign the parliament’s repeal of several
of the January 16 laws without delay,” reads the statement.

Biden strongly encouraged Yanukovych to continue to work with the
opposition to find compromises critical to a peaceful solution.

The White House noted that these include an amnesty law and a new
government that can bring political unity, win the confidence of the
Ukrainian people, and take Ukraine in the direction of Europe by
strengthening democratic institutions and making the reforms necessary
to achieve economic prosperity.

On January 28, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov tendered his resignation,
and the Verkhovna Rada repealed most of the laws adopted on January 16.
