You're reading: Women-parliamentarians visit Kachanivska prison, says penitentiary service

Batkivschyna parliamentary faction MPs Oleksandra Kuzhel, Liudmyla Denysova, and Tetiana Sliuz visited Kachanivska Penal Colony No. 54 on Wednesday, according to the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine. 

“The administration of the establishment allowed the people’s deputies to enter the territory of the establishment. During the visit the parliamentarians examined the premises where women sentenced to life in prison are kept, the sewing room of the prison’s production area, as well as a cell for convicted women… The representatives that accompanied the Verkhovna Rada members answered all of their questions in full,” reads the statement.

The penitentiary service also said that the MPs refused to visit the premises where former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had been held.

Meanwhile, Batkivschyna MPs Andriy Shevchenko and Andriy Senchenko met with the colony chief, Ihor Kolpaschykov, at Kharkiv-based Central Clinical Hospital No. 5. According to the penitentiary service, Kolpaschykov briefed the parliamentarians on the legal procedure of making phone calls by convict Tymoshenko at the clinic.
