Ukraine should use the situation on the world's food market in order to take the lead on it, according to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

“Since 1990, the volume of world imports of major types of livestock products has doubled. Today, the world’s population is more than 7 billion people, and it will grow to 9 billion by 2042… This is a historic opportunity for Ukraine, and we must make us of it to take our place in the food market,” Yanukovych said at an official meeting on the occasion of Farmer’s Day.

He also stressed that international experts believe Ukraine is among the countries with the best opportunities to make a decisive breakthrough in the agricultural sector.

Yanukovych said that in the next 10 years, the volume of agricultural production in Ukraine is projected to grow by about 30%, but this requires measures to encourage the competitiveness of agriculture and implement comprehensive reforms in the agricultural sector.
