Banking supervision in Ukraine should be strengthened in order to ensure the stability of the country's financial system, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"I’m confident that the improvement of the system of state supervision over the banking system and non-bank financial institutions is an issue that should currently be significantly strengthened at the legislative level," he said during the Conversation with the Country television project on Friday, Feb. 25.

Yanukovych said that a number of bills had already been drafted to achieve this goal. He also said that the country’s exchange rate policy remained stable.

"We are currently doing our best to limit the risks to our citizens and businesses while getting loans," Yanukovych said.

While commenting on the prospects for the distressed banks Rodovid and Nadra, he said that the state was continuing to draft respective decisions that would help protect the interests of depositors in these banks.
