You're reading: Yanukovych: Difficult economic situation in world requires active trade between Ukraine and Turkmenistan

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow have met in Ashgabat to discuss further cooperation between the states, according to the press service of the Ukrainian president.

Yanukovych said at the meeting that all of the existing agreements between the sides are being implemented. The president added that activities of the Ukrainian-Turkmen Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Cultural Cooperation also contribute to positive development of bilateral relations. He also pointed at prospects of trade intensification between the states.

“The difficult economic situation in the world requires active economic cooperation and trade between Ukraine and Turkmenistan,” Yanukovych said, and added that the countries could sign a free trade area agreement for this.

In turn, the president of Turkmenistan noted that the two states have friendly and promising relations.

“We will keep strengthening our relations. We have mutual understanding and trust in all issues,” Berdimuhamedow said.

He also praised active development of trade and economic relations between Ukraine and Turkmenistan.

Berdimuhamedow invited Yanukovych to visit Turkmenistan. The Ukrainian president accepted the invitation.

He also said that Ukraine and Turkmenistan are preparing a package of documents to settle “a number of interstate issues related to modern challenges.”
