The Ukrainian cities hosting the Euro 2012 European Football Championship should look festive, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has told the mayors of the cities, asking them to take the issue under their personal control.

"Starting with the airports, roadsides, and sidewalks – flowers should be planted. We still have time to make our cities look festive. I am asking Borys Viktorovych [Ukrainian Vice Premier and Infrastructure Minister Borys Kolesnikov] to send all officials to those of our regions that will host the championship in order to check everything and help. I’m demanding that all of you walk around and look [at the cities] by yourselves and check everything personally," Yanukovych said on Wednesday, at a meeting of the committee on the preparations for and holding Euro 2012 finals in Ukraine.

Kolesnikov said at the meeting that Ukraine spent $3.6 billion on the preparations for Euro 2012, while Poland spent $34 billion, according to him.
