You're reading: Yanukovych: Judicial system reform impossible without amending constitution

A comprehensive reform of Ukraine's judicial system is impossible without amending the Constitution, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

At a meeting on the occasion of the Day of the Court’s Employees held at the Supreme Court of Ukraine, the president said that he supported the recommendations of the Venice Commission concerning the reform of the judicial system.

At the same time, Yanukovych said the amendments to the constitution should be comprehensive. They should involve the reform not only of the judicial branch but of other areas, the president said.

"The preparation of proposals concerning the improvement of constitutional regulation continues. It is aimed at working out comprehensive changes to the constitution, which will allow [Ukraine] to comply with the recommendations of European institutions and the experience of reforms abroad," Yanukovych said.
