Brussels, Nov. 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych has said real freedom directly depends on the economic welfare of the public.

"Ukraine made an important ideological choice and chose the way of democracy, democratic development, freedom. At the same time I also would like to stress – a man is free when he is not poor, when he can protect himself. That’s why economic development is also one of the important things that directly influences democracy and freedom in our country," he said at a joint press conference with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso after the Ukraine-EU summit in Brussels on Monday.

An Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported that Ukrainian reporters congratulated President Yanukovych on Freedom Day.

Freedom Day was established under a decree of the third president of Ukraine, Viktor Yuschenko, (2005-2010) five years ago, to commemorate the Orange Revolution of 2004.
