A 20% cut in the number of government workers is being considered in Ukraine as part of a vast reform program.

"A presidential decision on reducing government staff and administrative spending is currently being prepared as part of the earlier mentioned administrative reform the president is planning to launch in the near future. A substantial reduction – not less than 20% – is being considered," the president’s chief of staff Serhiy Lyovochkin told Segodnya newspaper on Thursday.

Any staff changes can only be possible after the president ends work on the administrative reform and after an optimal Cabinet structure is determined, he said.

The reform stipulates a fewer number of ministries.

"Several ways of optimizing the number of ministries are being considered. This will be a large-scale reform and the president has been working hard on it. The state administrative functions will be slashed from more than 9,000 now to 5,000 with most of them to be relegated to local administrations. This will be the president’s major step forward towards deregulation and the transfer of powers to local governments," Lyovochkin said.
