Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has ordered the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine to respond to a letter sent by the defense lawyers of former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko regarding the violation of the constitutional rights of their client.

"On the orders of the Ukrainian president, a letter from lawyer Ihor Fomin and [the ex-minister’s wife] Iryna Lutsenko was submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine with a request to investigate the circumstances outlined in the letter, and immediately give a reasonable answer," the presidential press service reported on Friday.

Yanukovych said that investigators "should unswervingly observe the law and procedures, and not to violate the constitutional rights of Lutsenko."

The president also drew the attention of the Prosecutor General’s Office to the need to quickly respond to complaints from citizens in line with the law on access to public information.

As reported, lawyers Ihor Fomin, Volodymyr Orlov and public defender Iryna Lutsenko asked President Yanukovych to take urgent measures to restore the constitutional rights of Yuriy Lutsenko, who they claim is being illegally kept in jail.
