You're reading: Yanukovych says authorities not interfering in election campaign

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has stated that the authorities are unable to intrude in the work of the media during the election campaign.

“Speaking about the media, a center [for monitoring violations of election legislation] has been created. The television and radio broadcasting committee also keeps records. Today it is practically impossible to force any printed publication or a television channel to make reports on someone, or not. All this is funded by political parties or individual candidates for people’s deputies from majority constituencies,” Yanukovych said at a meeting with the clergy and religious organizations in Kyiv on Wednesday.

“As they say, he who pays the piper, calls the tune,” the president said.

He added that it is important to stick to the principles of democracy in everyday life in Ukraine, and not only in the election process.

Yanukovych also promised that the authorities would never intrude in the election process.
