Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed the law on the ratification of an agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the governments of Russia and Hungary on the transportation of nuclear materials between Russia and Hungary through the territory of Ukraine, the president's press service reported.

The Verkhovna Rada ratified this agreement on Oct. 23.

The governments signed the agreement on Oct. 17, 2012 in Kyiv. The
explanatory note to the ratification bill reads that the agreement
regulates security and responsibility of the parties during the
transportation of nuclear materials, determine the mechanisms of
cooperation between relevant agencies at all stages of the
transportation, and forms contractual terms for environmental
protection.

“The ratification will allow us to bring the current contractual and
legal basis on the transportation of nuclear materials between Ukraine,
Russia and Hungary into line with the requirements of the Vienna
Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage dated May 21, 1963
regarding the issues of loss recovery in case of a nuclear incident,”
reads the note.
