Ukraine expects the European Union to take a decision on the liberalization of the visa regime, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"We want you to feel that Ukraine is being modernized, the economy is being liberalized, and we expect the European Union soon to take a decision on the liberalization of the visa regime," he said at a meeting with EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom in Kyiv on Thursday.

Yanukovych said that the issue of liberalizing the visa regime was very sensitive for the Ukrainian public and was crucial ahead of the signing of an association agreement.

He said that Ukraine’s aspirations for European integration were also aimed at making a decision on the signing of an agreement on the creation of a free trade area with the European Union.

"In general, we sincerely want Europe to be open to the citizens of Ukraine as much as possible," Yanukovych said, adding that Ukraine also wants EU citizens to see the door to Ukraine open for them.
