Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has expressed his condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan in connection with the earthquakes and tsunamis that hit Japan on Friday, killing many people and causing significant destruction, the presidential press service has reported.

"With a feeling of deep sorrow, Ukraine has learned the news of the terrible earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, which led to human casualties and triggered significant destruction," reads the president’s message of condolence.

Yanukovych said that Ukraine was ready to provide humanitarian assistance to the friendly people of Japan, who have been hit by a disaster.

"On behalf of the Ukrainian people and on my own behalf, I express my deep condolences and words of encouragement to all those affected by the disaster," he said.
