You're reading: Yanukovych: Ukraine steadily moving into family of European nations

Ukraine is steadily walking the path of democratic reforms, President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

“We have set ourselves the task of entering the family of European
nations,” he said at a meeting on the occasion of the Day of Unity and
Liberty at the Ukraina National Palace of Arts in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Yanukovych said that European choice was a choice of democratic values, economic freedom and social standards.

At the same time, the president said that “good and brotherly”
relations with neighboring countries, as well as predictable and
consistent policy with strategic partners, were the key to stability and
prosperity.

“I’m confident that this year we will be a step closer to this goal,” he said.

Yanukovych also said that Ukraine would walk its own path, consistently defending its own interests.

The events held at the Ukraina Palace on the occasion of the Day of
Unity and Liberty were also attended by former Ukrainian Presidents
Leonid Kravchuk, Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yuschenko.

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, members of the Cabinet of Ministers,
Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak and representatives of the
clergy were also present in the hall.
