Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that authorities follow the policy of national pragmatism and first protect the interests of Ukraine and its citizens.

"Ukraine will become truly independent only with the strong economy. Ukrainians will be on firm ground in the world only if their rights were really protected," reads an address of Yanukovych to compatriots on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence posted on the Web site of the head of state.

The president said that among today’s goals are protection of the rights of Ukrainians, growth of their welfare and development of democratic institutions.

"Welfare of each citizen will become stable when corruption at all of the levels is removed. The nation will be strong when all democratic institutions will work – these are our goals," reads the address.

Yanukovych said that Ukraine’s history is inseparably linked to the modern Europe.

He said that the 20th anniversary of Independence did not come easy to the country.

"We’ve survived years of romantic upswing, crises and populism. However, irrespective of the events in the state people were working, bringing up children and hoping for the dignified life, strong and fair power," says the address.

The head of state said that now all branches of power have united for the sake of a common goal – the renovation of the state and establishing of successful Ukraine.

"Now it’s turn of each of us," he said.

"Twenty years is a good age for new undertakings and definite steps. Twenty years is the age of youth and hope… We’re upgrading the country and developing the economy. We’re building airports, roads and bridges, open stadiums. We’re building the state, which our previous generation dreamed of," reads the address.

Yanukovych wished many years of peace and welfare to Ukrainians.
