Ukraine could emerge from crisis by increasing domestic demand, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

“Amid the global crisis that has swept across Europe and that is
already creating risks even for the new centers of growth, such as
China, it is manufacturing and the domestic market that will help
Ukraine emerge from this crisis with minimal cost,” according to
Yanukovych’s opening speech, which was prepared for a final press
conference that was to be held on Wednesday, but was postponed because
of the situation in the Verkhovna Rada.

“We should make up for what we lose on the foreign markets, in these
difficult circumstances, on the domestic market. And there’s more than
enough work here – the country’s infrastructure, housing and utilities
sector and transport industry require a lot of modernization,” the
president said.

“It is domestic demand and stimulating government policy that should,
as they say, ‘load’ our industry with new orders,” reads the opening
speech.
