Victor Yanukovich you have just redeemed yourself in the eyes of Ukrainians! Lets hope you have other positive surprises in store for us... Bilingualism is entirely acceptable in the private sphere, but the state language must remain soley Ukrainian!

Russian is a regional language in Ukraine, and should be granted all rights according to the European minority language charter, not however including any all-national or state language status.

At last common sense prevails.

Those Ukrainians who speak Russian use the language of the subservient.

Next step is to get rid of Russian from Ukrainian TV, radio and all public life. The Russian language should be confined to minority channels and the private sphere. Do you see Russians speak Ukrainian on Russian TV and radio?

Who cares, it's just a means of communications. But I see a lot of Spanish on US TV, so who cares.

Anyone in Ukraine can speak any language they wish to.Schools in many other countries mandate that you need to have at least one foreign language class to graduate. If you do not want to graduate or get a diploma you do not need to take the language class.More languages learned helps people understand each other better and have less disagreements or misunderstandings.Ukraine is name of the country,so all people should know at least some Ukrainian language or is this too much for people to learn ? If people only want to speak russian, that is their right. As a country, all schools in Ukraine should teach whatever they see as a true Ukrainian language first and then any other language like Russian,English,Spanish,French or any other as a second language. I would think people in Ukraine would feel more proud to say they are Ukrainian in their own native language.Anyone that identify's Russian as their first and only native language probably see's themselves as still Russian, not Ukrainian which is confusing and part of the identity problem of half of Ukraine it would seem ?

It is not a surprise because Russia already knew that he would not make Russian an official language or recognize abkhazia or south Odesia. Either putin or MEDVEDEV came to inauguration. plus the gas and other thing remain at market price. Ukraine is not important anymore since Europe and the American already said that it will never get NATO membership. Yushchenko destroyed the relationship and it will never be the same again. Ukraine was and is traitor and will always be seen as such. Russia wants the good people pro Russian Ukraine people to move to Russia were they will be treated the same as Russians. 250 thousand people chosen this root last year alone. Ukraine will lose most of it population in next 20 years or so. They wil have to import third world immigrations that will turn Ukraine into a new ghetto like London.

The sooner the "good people pro Russian Ukraine people"... decide to move back home, the better for all concerned. Ukraine has more than adequate skills and talent to build a decent normal european country. Ukrainians wish only to live in peace as Ukrainians, and have good relations with all it's neighbors including Russia.

You are naive. There are good people everywhere. Very simply. It's the Leadership in Russia that cannot be trusted. The fact that you would trust those chauvinistic thieves, speaks volumes. And you are obviously anti-Ukrainian. Must be that KGB indoctrination. If you can't figure out who the real

criminals and thieves, are yet, then I feel sorry for you.

Ukraine language and civilization will vanish soon through low birth rate and emigration. So the Ukraine Nazis are fighting for nothing because there end is near naturally.

Hah!.. dream on tavarish. Ukrainian culture has survived the 70 year death camp called USSR primarily due to emigration. Now it stronger that it has EVER BEEN, and will continue to grow. You can take the Uke out of Ukraina, but you can't take Ukraina out of the Uke!

Nonsense. Ukrainians were never Nazi's. Maybe according to KGB misinformation. Nazis were Arians. Slavs were the subhumans, according to their doctrine. What historical nonsense are you reading?

If you believe in KGB misinformation then there is little hope for you.

Ukraine thinks there special same as the polish. There are many photos of Ukraine people during ww2 with swastika flags and hugging the Nazi troops. But your right, the Germans would have killed all the poles and Ukraine if he ever defeat Russia. Plus Germans are not Aryans they are Saxons same race as the English and Estonian fascist. Aryans were the native race of Iran thousand or so years ago.

The Russian language has little future because the use of Russian will decline when the Russian economy collapses along with the depletion of its natural resources, and the Russians discover that they are unable to produce any manufactured or intellectual product that the world will buy. At the moment, I own a Japanese car and camera and printer and camcorder and TV and blue-ray player, but do not own, and have never owned, and don't know anybody who owns or has ever owned any Russian product. The Russians are incapable of manufacturing even a washing machine or a radio or a hammer or a paper clip that the world wants to buy. It must be admitted that the Russians are able to trounce militarily countries like Georgia, but Russian armaments are inferior to the West's, and its forces are demoralized and poorly trained, and in any conflict with the West, they would be trounced. All that Russia has going for it is the cash it gets for fossil fuels. Fuel runs out, Russia relapses into insigificance.

Therefore, don't learn Russian, learn English.

ENGLISH is today the world's LINGUA FRANCA. Ukraine should follow INDIA'S example where English has the status of a "subsidiary official language" and is spoken extensively in business and administration. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about English at

English is the current lingua franca of international business, science, technology and aviation. It has replaced French as the lingua franca of diplomacy since World War II. The rise of English in diplomacy began in 1919, in the aftermath of World War I, when the Treaty of Versailles was written in English as well as in French, the dominant language used in diplomacy until that time. The widespread use of English was further advanced by the prominent international role played by English-speaking nations (i.e., the United States and the Commonwealth of Nations) in the aftermath of World War II, particularly in the establishment and organization of the United Nations. English is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (the other five being French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish). The seating and roll-call order in sessions of the United Nations and its subsidiary or affiliated organizations is determined by English alphabetical order.

When the UK became a colonial power, English served as the lingua franca of the colonies of the British Empire. In the post-colonial period, some of the newly created nations, who had multiple indigenous languages, opted to continue using English as the lingua franca to avoid the political difficulties inherent in promoting any one indigenous language above the others. Although the use of English in a variety of locations across the globe was established by the British Empire, in the latter half of the 20th century, widespread international use of English was much reinforced by the global economic, financial, scientific, military, and cultural preeminence of the English-speaking countries and especially the USA. Today all of the world's major scientific journals are published in English, which is definitive evidence that English is the lingua franca of science and technology. English is also the lingua franca of international Air Traffic Control communications. A landmark recognition of the dominance of English in Europe came in 1995 when, on the accession of Sweden, Finland and Austria to the European Union, the English language joined French and German as one of the working languages of the European Commission. A majority of the people living in the Scandinavian countries and Netherlands have good fluency in English as a second language.

Absolutely correct. The Russian language has no future in the world arena. It will never be used in international commerce, business or science. There is no need to learn this harsh language other than as a curiosity...much like Latin. It serves no purpose. The lingua franca of the world is English....and I suspect that most Russians would want to learn English if they had the proper encouragement and qualified teachers. At the moment the backwater mentality of the Russian psyche inhibits

their integration into western civilization. Of course, since Russia produces nothing of never has, that in itself gives Russians an inferiority complex on the international stage.

They compare what the world can produce to what they manufacture and they shudder in resignation and despair. That is the kind of complex that makes this country an alcoholic's paradise. They question their self worth...and rightly so.

I bet you own a nesting doll! Seriously though, it is rather telling that English, as a language, takes words from every other culture, with word origins from Greek, Latin, Old English, Middle English, French, etc., but there are only 2 words that are relatively common in English that are of Russian origin:

1. Vodka

2. Gulag

That says a lot about the cultural value Russia exports. There are other words (Steppe, Taiga, Babushka, Samovar, Sputnik) that are recognizable worldwide, but not in common use.

{# <-- parent id goes here
Anonymous March 10, 2010, 10:55 a.m.

I posted the "1. Vodka, 2. Gulag" comment above, and I want to be fair:

3. KGB

4. Czar

5. Blin

Those are also commonly used in English.

That shows how flexible and global English can be and so is deemed a 'modern' language. You're a dope, any language that doesn't have borrowed words is archaic. Why don't you get on your 'mobilni' to your friends to discuss or watch 'football' on the 'televisor' whilst eating a 'pizza' and leave others to their own 'biznezz'. Or don't they have borrowed words in Russian. If not then it's archaic. Put your 'denghi' where your gob is.

yes that what the west said so many times in the past. Russia is weak and inferior etc... But when i come to war they always lose i wonder why? Germans always think there so good but seem to lose every war they fight against Russia. You know Russia already beat the americans in war. They tried to invade during 1917 with the English and guess what they lost again :)NATO ran away from Georgia during 08 08 08 the whole world saw and laughed at the ugly yanks. Usa lost to somlia a country that doesn't even have food that is how powerful they really are.

you are obviously a jealous Canadian or Brit with nothing to do but whip up anti America hysteria. Right,if it wasnt for USA, you would see new aggression every day in every part of the world. And There would be no Ukraine, and Georgia would be swallowed up.

If Canadian-well im sorry that 50% of your country is ice

If Briton- well, you lost your entire empire after WW2. Need I say more?

USA is like a little children scared to fight the resistance face to face but uses toy planes to attack people on the grounds. The americans like to hide in there bases and cry that there NATO allies wont help them in Afghanistan. USA, USA were are you ? I could bet that Yanu said this as a strategic move, just for starting to be more accepted in the nationalist western side of Ukraine; but maybe he will need more than this to get it, and to do other things to keep the prorussian side content at the same time, so probably be prepared for more surprises and broken promises.

There is no need to get excited. The European convention on minority languages is a very good platform to provide various regions to use second language. This will give the right to regions to decide. In the same manner as for example Danish is not a candidate for global use in commerce and diplomacy, it is very helpfull to maintain the use of language in Germany's predominantly Danish occupied localities. Promotion of regional languages and cultures halps maintain good neighborly relations, as well as business ties.

Ukraine is blessed by having multiple languages spoken, as it is a sign of a better global citizan. This does not have anything to do with the need to learn English. Certainly, any good school system encourages that. Regional cooperation is growing in the world. Today, more Thai students study in China then in US. Tens of thousands of them, to be precise. Only a decade ago, this was unthinkable. Today, in Washington suburbs, most high school systems offer Chinese and Arabic, in addition to the well established Spanish. And while English is still the official language in US, to become a Social Worker in Washington suburbs, one has to have a functional knowledge of Spanish. It is as simple as that.

Pragmatism is what distinguishes US from many other places. While some proud Americans may sound tough, the truth is, they will adopt to the changing world, while encouraging poor Ukrainians to keep their narrow nationalistic blinkers on!!!
