Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has vetoed the law on documents confirming the identity and citizenship of Ukraine and returned it with his proposals to the Verkhovna Rada for further consideration, the presidential press service reported on Friday.

The head of state refused to sign the law, as it "carries a risk of violating the constitutional rights of citizens … and the law also violates the international commitments undertaken by Ukraine, [being] a step back towards the introduction of European and international standards in the protection of human rights and the implementation of the action plan regarding the liberalization of the EU visa regime."

According to the president, the law "does not ensure the security of citizens, will lead to an unjustified increase in budget expenditures, will have a negative impact on the budget of every family, and, in addition, a number innovations proposed in the law do not meet modern needs, as they are unfounded and unacceptable."
