KHARKIV - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has called for partnership between Ukrainian and Russian manufacturers of electricity generating equipment "where we can see that it would be profitable economically" but argued that takeovers of Ukrainian enterprises by Russian firms are unacceptable.

“If one looks into the future to see who our partners [in power
engineering] are, I’m sure that our partners are enterprises in Russian
power engineering. Both our specialists and our calculations suggest
this. But we must check what the effect of synergy would give us in the
event of unification. We should go ahead with unification where we can
see it would be profitable economically,” Yanukovych told a meeting in
Kharkiv.

However, “we must rule out takeovers,” he said. “If we intelligently
unify with Russia in this matter, it will eliminate competition between
our countries and we will obtain better marketing opportunities for our
power engineering goods in the world.”
