Ukraine has taken into account the criticism by the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which requested proper conditions for jailed former prime minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko, and supports the initiative for an independent probe into the trial of the ex-premier, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

“Naturally, as a human being I sympathize with her…. But it’s not
only about sympathy – I wish her to have the trial end as soon as
possible and have the court pass a fair verdict,” the president said in
an interview with SUPERillu, a weekly German magazine.

Yanukovych said they supported the initiative of President of the
European Parliament Martin Schulz for an independent inquiry into
Tymoshenko’s case lead by former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski
and former president of the European Parliament Pat Cox.

The Ukrainian president said that Kyiv took into account the
criticism by Germany and the ECHR concerning Tymoshenko’s treatment. “We
have worked together with Germany and now German physicians together
with Ukrainian doctors are involved in the treatment to ensure the
desired transparency,” Yanukovych said.

The president also said that after the end of the trial they would try to be humane toward Tymoshenko.

The magazine promised to publish the full interview with the Ukrainian president on June 26.
