Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has proposed staging the 2022 Winter Olympics in the Carpathian mountains in the west of the country.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has proposed staging the 2022 Winter Olympics in the Carpathian mountains in the west of the country, the presidential press service said on Thursday, May 27. "If we decide to initiate this (the Olympic Games in Ukraine), we will start working on the official nomination of our country as the holder of the Winter Olympic Games in Carpathians," Yanukovych was quoted as saying in Lviv in western Ukraine.

Ukraine's only previous experience in hosting Olympic events was when some of the soccer matches from the 1980 Moscow Games were held in Kyiv.

The next Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia in 2014.

Agree, if he will dead by this time, Ukraine will live.

Actually he is not a president -he is a moscow's pupet.

Unless things change and he starts to show that he is interested in democracy and a free press I doubt the West would support such a move. Not only that, but how could Ukraine afford such an expensive venture? Is Yanu's Papa Putin going to finance it?

The Canadian province of British Columbia had just finished hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. It will probably take them twenty more years just to finish paying off these extravagant games amid the corruption scandals plaguing their current provincial government. And all the true olympic games costs are not fully known yet to the public. Tax rates are also being increased to pay the heavy costs associated with these games. Bear in mind that British Columbia is a very rich province that is now facing huge debt burdens.

Can Ukraine realistically even entertain such a massive undertaking at this time when other more advanced regions in the world are having difficulty paying off such adventures?

Wishful dream. Russia is already getting Sochi. The Olympic committee is not going to give the Olympics to a Soviet or ex- Soviet member so soon after that. Besides Ukraine does not have the money for it and they are about 50 years behind the times in providing accomodations for the athlete and Olympic guests.

I just love these Kyiv Post articles. Of all the articles on here, how many predictions, comments and wishful thinkings actually become true? 10%

The way Yanukovich is working it will be Russia 2022 again :(

First we have bigger issues to solve, then to waste billions on the Olympics. Greece,Vancouver, and almost every city and its country underestimated the costs, and in one way or another is still paying for the events.

2012 will be a test to see how we can accomplish such large scale projects.

Build new European rail within Ukraine, that is modern and fast paced, and rid yourself of the Soviet Rail, and slow Trains.

I'd prefer to wait until after the fireworks are over in Sochi before offering the North Caucasus Emirate crowd another opportunity to slaughter people.
