Ukrainian Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema says at least 200 Ukrainian troops were killed in the fighting near Ilovaisk, Donetsk Oblast.

“At least 200 people were killed near Ilovaisk,” Yarema told reporters on Sept. 10.

Several hundreds of anti-terrorist operation troops were encircled by rebels and Russian servicemen in Ilovaisk in late August. The capturing of the Ukrainian troops and members of Ukrainian volunteer battalions took over a week. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said the information on the situation in Ilovaisk was classified and promised to make it public later.

A provisional investigative commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and capture of Ukrainian troops was created in a meeting of the Ukrainian parliament on September 4. The meeting was closed to the press.
