You're reading: Yatseniuk: Opposition not considering possibility of repeat elections in 5 constituencies

The issue of repeat elections in five constituencies is currently not on the agenda, Head of the Council of the Batkivschyna United Opposition Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

“At present, there is no decision concerning the repeat elections at a legal level… There is an appeal by the Central Election Commission to parliament about the need for repeat elections. There is an appeal by the Verkhovna Rada to the CEC about the need for repeat elections. None of them has passed any legal decision,” he told reporters at Kyiv Administrative Court of Appeals on Friday.

At the same time, he said the opposition was not ready to support a decision to hold the rerun elections in the troubled constituencies.

“We are not ready to support this decision… We are ready to support only one decision: the CEC has no right to opt out of the process of vote counting,” Yatseniuk said.

As reported, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Ukraine adopted a resolution on November 5 recognizing the impossibility of announcing parliament election results in five single-seat constituencies – Nos. 94, 132, 194, 197 and 223. In addition, the commission recognized the need to hold repeat elections in these constituencies and asked parliament to take a decision on holding repeat elections in these constituencies.

On November 6, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution that proposes to recommend that the Central Election Commission (CEC) schedule repeat elections in 5 troubled constituencies, Nos. 94, 132, 194, 197, and 223.

The opposition has challenged in the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine the Central Election Commission’s decision to hold rerun elections in five single-seat constituencies.
