You're reading: Yatseniuk skeptical about Putin’s proposal to postpone referendum in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk is skeptical about Russian President Vladimir Putin's call on the representatives of the southeastern regions of Ukraine to postpone the referendum scheduled for May 11.

“The fact that Russia is asking to postpone a referendum on May 11 shows that the Russian president should be informed that no referendum is planned in Ukraine for May 11. And if terrorists and separatists supported by Russia received a command to postpone something that was not planned, these are their internal squabbles,” the Ukrainian prime minister said at the end of the government meeting in Kharkiv on Wednesday.

Earlier, Putin called on representatives of the southeastern regions of Ukraine to postpone the referendum scheduled for May 11.

“We are asking representatives of the southeastern regions of Ukraine and federalization supporters to reschedule the referendum scheduled for May 11,” Putin told a press conference on Wednesday. Putin said Russia calls on representatives of the southeastern regions of Ukraine to do this “to create necessary conditions for dialogue” with the Kyiv administration.
