You're reading: Yatsenyuk: Results of local elections in eastern Ukraine to be recognized only if conducted according to international norms

The local elections foreseen by the law on a special status of some areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions that was adopted on Tuesday will be recognized only if they are conducted according to international norms, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has said.

‘The elections will be recognized only if they are conducted in accordance with norms and rules of international laws,’ PM said at a sitting of the government on Sept. 17.

According to Yatsenyuk, it includes access to observers, a mechanism for election commission formation, the ensuring of political campaigning, and free rights to participate in the elections for both candidates for deputy and political forces.

The premier also noted that the government had been tasked with funding the elections if the Central Election Commission (CEC) announces them.

As reported, at the sitting behind closed doors on Sept. 16, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the law on implementation of special self-government procedure in certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions for three years and on holding early local elections in these regions on Dec. 7, 2014.
