Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Feb. 26 asked the International Committee of the Red Cross to help deliver Ukrainian aid to the population of separatist-controlled areas in eastern Ukraine across the frontline.

“The Ukrainian government has done everything possible from supplying natural gas and electricity to sending over humanitarian aid,” Yatsenyuk said during a meeting in Kyiv with ICRC President Peter Maurer, who is on a two-day visit to Ukraine for meeting with Ukrainian leaders.

The prime minister said people living in these territories are virtually hostages. “It is our common task to provide humanitarian aid to those who live in those regions,” he said.

Yatsenyuk said he would introduce a revised 2015 draft budget to parliament with proposed larger allocations for helping displaced persons.
