Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has assured the European Commission that the Ukrainian energy system is ready to provide for stable natural gas transit, the information and public relations department of the secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has reported.

The department said that Yatseniuk had a phone talk with European Commission Vice President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic. The parties discussed the top-priorities of cooperation in the energy area, including Ukraine’s preparations for the winter period.

“The prime minister has confirmed the full readiness of the Ukrainian energy system to the provision of stable natural gas transit. Yatsenyuk and Sefcovic also paid attention to the attraction of investment from the European Union to the Ukrainian gas transport system, which will increase Ukraine and EU energy security,” the secretariat of the cabinet said.

The parties exchanged opinions on the South Stream project. In the light of the decision to halt construction of South Stream made by Russia Yatsenyuk said that the European Union did not need the project, as the Ukrainian gas transport system is and will be a reliable route for supplies of Russian gas to the EU. Sefcovic confirmed the position of the European Commission that the bilateral agreements on the construction of South Stream are not in line with EU legislation.
