You're reading: Zyuganov calls for no-fly zone over Donbas, Luhansk region

Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov believes a no-fly zone should be imposed over the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

“It would be the right thing to impose a no-fly zone over the
territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Russia as a member of the
Security Council has full rights to do that,” Zyuganov told reporters on
Monday, adding that it would “help eliminate any military-purpose
objects appearing over this territory.”

The politician also said Russia, in the event of de facto recognition
of the Luhansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s Republic,
could put in place border control that would help all people who want to
leave there, primarily children, old people, and women, leave the
territory. “At least we will have enough resources for that,” he said.

Zyuganov also believes volunteers can be sent from Russia to defend
the population of the Luhansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s
Republic. “We believe that volunteers from Russia, primarily those who
are well-trained and who have fought in Afghanistan and other war zones,
could provide the necessary assistance to those who are bravely
fighting there,” Zyuganov said.

Zyuganov also said he believes that Bandera-followers and “all kinds
of bastards” are not really fighting the people of the southeastern
regions of Ukraine. “This war, which was declared by the Americans on
the Russian Federation, is becoming increasingly large-scale and has now
essentially turned into a genocide of the people who live in those
territories.”

Zyuganov said he believes that this Bandera gang will not stop at
anything if they take over the southeastern territories.” Any patriot
who voted for independence in the southeastern regions of Ukraine will
be persecuted and punished by this administration tomorrow, he said.
“For this reason, we definitely shouldn’t let that happen,” he said.

Zyuganov also said he believes that, if this “Nazi-Bandera gang”
reaches the Russian borders, it will cause endless provocations in
Crimea and the territories near the border.

Leonid Slutsky, the head of the State Duma committee on CIS affairs,
Eurasian integration, and liaison with Russians living abroad, spoke in
favor of the idea to declare a no-fly zone over the Donetsk and Luhansk
regions.

“I believe this proposal is a good one and is absolutely justified,” Slutsky told Interfax on Monday.

At the same time, he said he doubts the expediency of sending
volunteers to the southeastern regions of Ukraine. “We need to carefully
weigh all the pros and cons here to prevent provocations,” Slutsky
said, commenting on the proposal made by Zyuganov.

Slutsky said it is much more important to organize a humanitarian
corridor to enable women, children, and old people to leave the
dangerous areas.
