SOFIA, Bulgaria — Bulgarian opposition lawmakers are calling for a vote of no confidence against the government over its decision to cancel plans for a second nuclear plant in the country.

The motion for the fourth vote of no confidence against the center-right government was signed on Friday by 48 opposition lawmakers in the 240-seat parliament. They say that by dropping the project, Bulgaria will have to sharply increase electricity prices and to import electricity.

Last month, Bulgaria scrapped plans for the 2,000-megawatt Russian-build nuclear plant citing lack of foreign investors for the multi-billion project.

The government has repeatedly pledged to lessen Bulgaria’s almost total dependence on Russian energy supplies. With its comfortable majority in parliament, it will most likely survive the vote, expected to be held next week.
