Ashgabat - The CIS Council of Prime Ministers has approved a nuclear and radiation security concept in the field of the peaceful use of atomic energy, a source in the CIS Executive Committee told reporters on Friday, Nov. 21.

The document lays down the main principles, tasks and primary areas of nuclear radiation security cooperation. An action plan will be drawn up next year to support the concept.

The Council has also approved a number of programs, among them the interstate target program “Reclamation of Lands Impacted by Uranium Mining”. The main purpose of this program is a pilot project reclaiming two sites in Kyrgyzstan and one Tajikistan, which currently present a potential transborder environmental threat to the Central Asian region.

A humanitarian cooperation plan for 2015-2016 was another item on the agenda, alongside the 2015-2017 action plan supporting the CIS tourism cooperation strategy.

Council meetings held in the narrow and expanded formats highlighted competition and pricing on the crude and petroleum product markets, allocations for the creation and development of the unified air defense network and some other issues.

The next meeting of the CIS Council of Prime Ministers has been tentatively scheduled for May 29, 2015, in Astana, Kazakhstan.
