You're reading: Conflicts take toll on journalists in South Asia

NEW DELHI (AP) — The International Federation of Journalists says intensifying conflicts in Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to pose threats to the lives of journalists, while the end of fighting in Sri Lanka and Nepal has eased dangers in those countries.

A report by the federation says threat levels to journalists also remain high in conflict-ridden areas of India’s remote northeast, the Himalayan region of Kashmir and central India where Maoist rebels have stepped up a decades-old insurgency.

The report on press freedom in South Asia was released in New Delhi on Tuesday to mark World Press Freedom Day. It also examined the threats and challenges faced by the media in Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives.
