An Egyptian police general says the sons of the former president have been detained for 15 days to investigate their role in violence against protesters and corruption.
Maj. Gen. Mohammed el-Khatib, head of South Sinai security, told a crowd outside the courthouse early Wednesday in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh that the two would be detained in Cairo while the charges were investigated.
Former President Hosni Mubarak, 82, was hospitalized Tuesday night with heart problems as investigations began over allegations of corruption and attacks on the protesters who eventually brought down his regime in mid-February.
Mubarak was believed to be grooming his younger son Gamal, a top official in the ruling party, to succeed him.
