'First of all I welcome that this vote took place within a democratically agreed process inside the country,' he said in a statement released in Brussels on Sept. 19.
He said that it was a ‘sound decision’ in a time ‘when sticking together has proven its worth in meeting the challenges we are facing in all walks of life.’
According to final figures, at a referendum held on Sept. 18, 55.3 percent of residents of Scotland voted against the country’s independence from the United Kingdom.
